Die Uni brennt!

Just so you know, my political activist streak came through again:

Since Thursday, the students in Austria are protesting against ... well, the system :D Moar information here on this facebook page and also here. It started with the Academy of Arts, then they've moved on to the largest lecture hall of the University of Vienna, the auditorium maximum, where they've lasted over 50 hours already. Other occupations are happening in different lecture halls, like at the technical University of Vienna.

I'm currently in Graz (at home), where we did the same yesterday and occupied a lecture hall - not there now because I kinda caught a cold from that, but I'll go down later.

I'm not totally comfortable with everything that's been happening (like people not being able to take an exam because the auditorium maximum was occupied), but it's kind of fascinating - the spontaneity and organisation of the whole event is dazzling. Like, in the audimax they're apparently electing a 6-person committee every day to organise stuff. They're cooking, they have a lot of panel discussions, they're organised a press conference, and between that they party with DJs and bands playing.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know what's happening - there's live updates on @unibrennt (Vienna audimax) and @ugrazgehoertuns (Graz).
Check out this picture taken at 1 a.m. today after 36 hours in the audimax</a>, I find it quite impressive:

Kinda unrelated, but having to do with my break from squatting today: THE BUFFY SEASON 2 FINALE MADE ME CRY CRY CRY ;_; (...shut up.)

Smooth! :) Students are always good at finding parties everywhere. I remember the times when my uni was being blocked by students because they were against the study fees. It was summer and they were BBQing everywhere. *gg* Hopefully you'll be more successful, though.

It's my first time in a uni protest thing, and I find it pretty cool :D At the moment we're still going strong - I guess the problems start on Tuesday when uni starts again (tomorrow is a national holiday)...

I love protesting and demonstrations to an unhealthy degree.

Public demonstrations are great until you live in Paris and discover that it's the secret hobby of the French. Then you wish that they'd just sit down and shut up. At least once a month some part of the city will be blocked off by protesters, or the subway will be shut down because of a labor strike, or some idiot kids will have gotten shot because they decided to throw gasoline bombs at a police car. And no matter what tiny, inconsequential, absurdly minute labor or social issue they happen to be protesting, they always think they're changing the world because it's May 1968 again.

Ah, France. The land of high culture, romance, and not using your brain all the time.
